Text 1
The king and the critic
A king likes to write stories. He thinks that his stories are good. One day he shows his stories to a critic.
The critic says that the stories are bad. Then the king tells his soldiers to take the critic to prison.
After two weeks the king says to the critic that he is free. He invites the critic to dinner.
After dinner the king shows the critic his stories again. He asks the critic what he thinks about them.
The critic doesn’t answer the king. He goes to the soldiers and says: „Take me back to prison!“

Jane, Betty and Ben
Jane is a little girl. She has no brothers or sisters. But she has two friends: Ben and Betty.
Ben is a big dog. Betty is a big doll. Day after day Jane plays with Betty and Ben.
They play in the house, they play in the yard, they play in the field, near the river.
One day Jane sees many red and white flowers near the river. She wants to give them to her mother.
But she falls into the river. Ben jumps after her. He catches Jane by the dress.
Then he puts Jane under a big tree. Jane opens her eyes and cries: “Where is Betty?”
Ben looks up and down and jumps into the river. Them he comes back and puts Betty under the big tree, too.

Snip and Snap
Ted has a little puppy. It is black and white. Fred also has a puppy. It is black and white too.
Ted and Fred are two brothers. Their puppies are brothers, too. Snip is Ted’s puppy. Snap is Fred’s puppy.
Ted likes to play with his dog and Fred likes to play with his.
Snip’s left ear is white. Snap’s left ear is black. Snip’s head is black. Snap’s head is white.
Little dogs live in little dog-houses. They run out of their houses.
They run in the street and meet little kittens, hens and chicks, ducks and pigs.
Snip and Snap run after them and animals run from them.

Tick, tock
“Tick, tock,” says the clock. “Wake up! Jump out of bed, Ted and Fred!” –
“It is time to get up and go to school”, says Ted. The boys jump out of bed.
They wash their faces, they brush their teeth, they wash their hands. They have breakfast and go to school”.
“Tick, tock,” says the clock. “Go home, Fred and Ted!” – “It is time to go home,” says Ted.
And the boys run home. They come home, put their books on the shelf, wash their hands and have dinner.
Then they go in the garden and play with their friends. Their favorite game is Hide-and-Seek.

The dog and the kittens
The dog lives in the yard. A box stands in the yard. The dog has three little puppies in this box.
The cat lives in the same yard. A basket stands near the box. The cat has two little kittens in this basket.
One day the cat goes out of the yard and does not come back. “Where is our mother?” ask the little kittens. And they cry and cry.
The dog comes up to their basket. “Don’t cry”, says the dog. “I want to help you”.
And the dog takes one of the little kittens and puts it into the box.
The little kitten looks at the puppies. The puppies look at the little kitten.
The dog goes to the basket again and again takes the kitten and puts it into the box.
“Now you are my children”, says the dog. “I am your mother and these puppies are your brothers. Play with them!”
And the kittens do not cry. Now they have a new mother.

Frisk and Tom
Frisk is a little dog. He is gray and brown. He has no dog-house, he has no bed.
He has only one friend. His friend is little Tom. Tom is a schoolboy. He goes to school every day.
Every morning Frisk sees Tom. Frisk is happy when he sees Tom. He says “Bow, bow”. And Tom says “Good morning, Frisk”.
One morning Tom’s book drops out of his bag. Frisk sees the book and runs to take it.
He takes the book and gives it to Tom. Tom is happy. He says “You are a very good dog!
Come with me! I have a new dog-house for you”. Frisk is very happy. He jumps near Tom and says “Bow, bow”.

The candy dog
Bobby is a little boy. He likes candy. One day his mother says: “Bobby, guess what I have!”
Bobby answers: “Candy! Candy!” – “Yes, Bobby, it is a little candy dog!” – “Oh, mother, it is so cute!
I want to put it into my box, I don’t want to eat it!”
But Bobby looks and looks at his candy dog and says: “This candy dog has very big tail”. And Bobby eats the candy dog’s tail.
“Now”, says Bobby, “I want to put you into my box”.
But Bobby does not put the candy dog into his box. He looks and looks at the candy dog’s legs.
He says: “Your legs are very big, I want to eat them”. And Bobby eats the candy dog’s legs.
Then the boy says: “Little candy dog, you are very funny: you have no tail, no legs, now I must eat you!”
And Bobby eats his candy dog.

A cat wants to have a friend
A cat wants to have a friend. It looks at everyone who passes by. Everyone who passes by asks: «Little cat, what do you want?»
And the cat says: «I want to have a friend!» A dog passes by and says: «I want to be your friend» — «Sing me a song», — says the cat.
«Bow, bow», — says the dog. «I don’t like your song», — says the cat. «I don’t want to be your friend».
A hen passes by and says: «Let’s be friends!» — «Sing me a song», — says the cat.
«Cluck, cluck», — says the hen. «No, your song is not good, I don’t want to be your friend».
Then the mouse passes by and asks: «Can I sing a song?» — «Yes, please», says the cat.
«Squick, squick», — sings the grey mouse. «Oh, I like your song and I like you! Let’s be friends!» — says the cat. «Yes, yes, I agree!»
What a funny little mouse! It wants to play with the cat!

A kitten and the red ball
The basket stands on the table. A ball is in the basket. It is a big red ball. Pussy, our kitten, sees the ball and says: «I want to play with this ball!»
Pussy jumps up and up, it wants to get the ball, but cannot catch it. It tries and tries but cannot get the ball.
It touches the basket and it falls down with the ball.
The kitten falls down, too.
— Mew, mew, I cannot jump, I cannot get the ball. Help me please!
Mum and Jane come into the room. They see the kitten on the floor. It is very angry. Jane takes the ball and give it to Pussy.
The kitten begins to play with the big red ball. Now it runs and jumps after the ball and it is very happy.
